Basketball Yukon has recognized that there are many athletes that wish to develop their skills in the game of basketball. In order to assist these athletes, Basketball Yukon introduced the Regional Training Centres (RTC) in Whitehorse, in the fall of 2006 for boys and girls ages 12 - 17.
The curriculum that is used in the RTC to teach players is the same curriculum used at the Canada Basketball Center for Performance and is taught by experienced coaches who have an understanding of the Canada Basketball CP Program. Athletes will be selected for the RTC in Whitehorse by attending Regional Training Center Identification Camps in each fall.
The fee to attend an RTC Identification Camp will be $40.00, which will include Canada Basketball and Basketball Yukon Memberships as well as Insurance during the camp. Once an athlete is selected to attend the RTC program they will pay a participation fee of $300.00 plus GST in order to participate. Athletes will receive sixty hours of training as well as Basketball Yukon practice gear and other items as determined by Basketball Yukon.
The 60-hour training program will operate from September to April. The main components of the Regional Training Centre are to develop strong individual offensive skills and to learn the principles of team offense. In a nutshell the players will learn to play offense rather than run a particular offense. This will all be done in an elite competitive environment and may include some type of competitive element, (i.e. participation in a tournament that Basketball Yukon sponsors) This new unified approach to identifying talent will help Basketball Yukon develop young aspiring players into elite basketball players.
